ATS, Professional or Traditional CV: Which Should You Use?

Compare the three most useful CV styles and learn which one to send for online job portals, direct applications and government or conservative employers.

Updated 2 November 2026

ATS-friendly CV

A plain, single-column layout that software can read easily. Use it when you apply through a job portal or a company's online careers page, where your CV is likely to be read by software first.

Professional CV

A modern layout with a touch of colour and a clear structure that leads with your achievements. Use it when a person is likely to read it first, such as when you email a hiring manager or hand it over after networking. It is especially useful in private companies and modern industries.

Traditional CV

A classic serif layout that opens with personal details and usually includes references. It suits conservative employers, and many public sector, education and professional roles. Note that some government posts also require a specific application form, so always read the advert carefully.

How to choose

  • Applying online through a portal? Choose ATS-friendly.
  • Sending it straight to a person? Choose Professional.
  • Applying to a conservative or public sector employer? Choose Traditional.
  • Not sure? ATS-friendly is the safest choice, because both people and software can read it.
